Hybrid cars are the future of the automobile industry. In 1997 Toyota introduced
the Toyota Prius in Japan and but did not release it in the United States until the year 2000. In 1999 Honda released the the 2 door Honda Insight to the American public and it was a huge success. 2002 saw the release of the Honda Civic Hybrid.
In 2004 the Toyota Prius won Motor Trend’s Magazines ‘Car of the Year’ award. People had to wait months to order a Prius. As gasoline prices soar more and more consumers are looking to save money and protect our environment. A hybrid car helps with both.
The problem that the US government is facing now is with more efficient cars on the road the amount raised through the gasoline tax to fix and maintain our roads is steadily Decreasing. There are several Road User Studies running from 2008-2012 to test the pay per mile Scenario versus the gasoline tax. Hybrid cars have contributed to this decrease in funds as most can get up to 100 miles per gallon and this has the government looking for other ways to make up the difference.
Every year the hybrids that are released are more stylish and fuel efficient than the previous years. The 2009-2010 future hybrid cars are competing against each other and the Consumer wins by getting better mpg, rebates and finance options.
